 Interim Co-CEOs Message

The Library is committed to advancing early literacy. Our Ready 2 Read Books from Birth program, Ready 2 Read centers, Ready 2 Read storytimes and other events are examples of that commitment. PGCMLS has partnered with the County’s Smart Start for Babies initiative that incorporates the PGCMLS Ready 2 Read Books from Birth service. Parents or legal guardians in Prince George’s County may sign up to begin receiving one book per month for each of their children from birth to the month prior to their 5th birthday.

At the recent Smart Start for Babies event, Library Board of Trustees President Samuel A. Epps, IV had this to say: “The books are provided through the Dolly Parton Books from Birth program. We currently have 5,300 young children receiving their own books.” (WTOP 105.5 FM: Prince George’s Co. wants babies to have ‘smart start’ with books, early learning by Kate Ryan, May 4, 2018)

Our 2018 Summer @ Your Library program extends our literacy initiative to all ages. Check out our My Library Rockin’ video. Stay active and alert this summer with our Libraries Rock! events starting this month. Participants of all ages may register online via Beanstack. Just for signing up, you will receive a prize. Library customers may get points and earn prizes by checking out books, logging reading or attending library events. Prizes include: Tee shirts, event tickets, tote bags, books, gift cards and musical/educational toys.

Enjoy Literacy for Life @ your library!

The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized PGCMLS for Using Data Visualization to Improve Performance with a National Achievement Award in the category of Libraries. The County Library System uses Tableau software to create statistical reports that facilitate data driven decision making.

The Library’s data is converted into appropriate actions and goals that enhance our customer’s experience.By using Tableau's innovative data visualization and analysis, the Library is able to staff the branches more effectively, monitor the circulation of millions of collection items and upgrade services.

PGCMLS was the first in the state of Maryland to use this process. The State Library of Maryland was so delighted with the results that a grant was created for all of the libraries in the state to participate in this initiative.

PGCMLS Co-CEO Michelle Hamiel had this to say about the NACo award:

We are delighted to receive this honor! Using data allows the Library to make customer-focused decisions. We get insight into our customers’ journeys and behaviors with library resources, giving us the opportunity to connect all Prince George’s County residents with the best resources to meet their needs.

NACo President Roy Charles Brooks said,

Counties seize opportunities to deliver services more efficiently and build stronger communities every day. Achievement Award-winning programs are examples for counties that are determined to enhance services for our residents. Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice, county administration, information technology, libraries, health and civic engagement to list a few. More
