Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Teach-In: Youth Activism for the U.S. & Local Communities

This staff-led session will study youth activism in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s era and its relevance to youth activism in local communities today. It is part of an entire day devoted to the exploration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Explore the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and engage in staff-led interactive sessions about his impact on history, politics, the arts, social change, and racial healing.
 

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Maryland Governor Wes Moore stated, “Studying history isn’t just about knowing what happened in the past. It’s about knowing our power in the present.” 

Teach-in participants are welcome to register to attend one or all of the interactive sessions, which will explore these topics in the context of Dr. King’s legacy and impact on participants' own lives. Find each session linked in the calendar below.

Schedule of Events

12:30-1:30 pm - History & Politics: This session will study the impact of Dr. King’s legacy on history and politics during the civil rights era and today.

2:00-3:00 pm - Love-in-Action & Social Change: This session will study the impact of Dr. King’s philosophy of love-in-action and its impact on social change during his era and today.

3:30-4:30 pm - Youth Activism for the U.S. & Local Communities: This session will study youth activism in Dr. King’s  era and its relevance to youth activism in local communities today.

5:00-6:00 pm - Art, Music, & Social Justice: This session will study the impact of the arts on the civil rights movement and the arts’ impact on social justice in the U.S. today.

6:30-7:30 pm - Community Conversation on Racial Healing: This session will discuss Dr. King’s impact on racial healing in the U.S., as well as being a compassionate space of conversation and listening on building racial equity and social change in our community today.

In exploring the history of Dr. King and the civil rights movement, let's learn from each other and study where we as a nation have been, where we are today, and where we need to be in the future to advocate for justice and social change.
