The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System maintains a permanent law library in the Prince George’s County Correctional Center (CCC). While run by PGCMLS staff, the CCC library is not open to the public, and its non-circulating legal reference and research collection is accessible only to those currently incarcerated at that location.
This instance of the Library not only provides incarcerated County residents critical access to legal information and other learning resources, but also supports their professional development and personal enrichment by providing a variety of educational materials like GED textbooks, ELL resources, and CDL manuals; religious texts in multiple languages; and general interest books that are free to borrow on their electronic tablets.
As required by law, individuals incarcerated at the CCC have access to legal resources to research their cases, facilitated by PGCMLS. They can do this research on the law library app on their tablets, or they can visit the CCC law library by appointment.
In the law library, incarcerated individuals can use the physical law books to research their case, or they can access LexisNexis on one of the twelve new law library laptops acquired by the 2024 Pull Up Fund grant. These laptops do not have access to the general internet.
A PGCMLS librarian will look up laws and court cases for any incarcerated individual who requests help. (Scope of research is limited by PGCMLS’ Memorandum of Understanding with the County; all requests are documented with a compliance form.)
Materials and reference services available to incarcerated individuals at the CCC include:
