In-branch service Contact your local library to learn if they have current volunteer opportunities, and to obtain an application.
Teen Action Groups (TAG) Teens work together to create community-based programs while earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
VolunTEEN Students in grades 6-12 can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours online by submitting book reviews through the Beanstack app.
Kids Achieve Clubs Promote the education of students in grades 1-6 by providing homework assistance and practice with reading skills. Visit our Events page for current location options, and reach out to your location of interest.
Language Conversation Clubs Plan and lead activities that promote oral conversation skills in various languages for adult learners in a welcoming, fun, and respectful environment. To apply, fill out an Intercultural Services Application.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The minimum age requirement for volunteering at branches is 14.
  • For Kids Achieve Club, the minimum age is 15.
  • Parent / guardian consent is required for volunteers under 18.

Teens needing student service learning (SSL) hours can participate in ongoing opportunities to earn SSL hours such as Teen Action Groups (TAG) and VolunTEEN. Those 14 or older are welcome to reach out to their local library to find out about other volunteer opportunities.

The number of hours volunteers contribute depends upon their assignments, but most volunteers average 2-6 hours per week, with a maximum of 10 hours per week allowed.

Adult volunteers (18 or over) will be required to have a full criminal background check as part of the application process.

Recruitment for Kids Achieve Club is seasonal, since the program is only active during the school year.

Currently PGCMLS doesn’t have opportunities for court-mandated community service hours. Options in the community for court-ordered service include the SHARE Food Network and the Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility.
