Largo, Maryland – After a long wait, the newly renovated Surratts-Clinton Branch Library at 9400 Piscataway Road in Clinton will open to the public beginning Monday, March 4, 2024, at 10 am. While the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) does not typically open branches ahead of a grand opening event, Library officials are excited to make the facility available to the surrounding community at the first opportunity possible. 

The renovated 25,682-square-foot interior will allow staff to host storytimes and other programs for larger audiences in its new “Discovery Bay”-themed children’s area, with sailboat-shaped reading nooks, a lighthouse for children to sit on and read, a wall mural of animals and fish of the Chesapeake Bay, seagulls flying from the ceiling, and nautical-themed furniture. Staff are happy to welcome children from nearby schools and the greater community back into the branch.

"We are looking forward to welcoming back the Clinton community into our beautiful new space! It includes a computer lab, dedicated teen and children's areas, and multiple study rooms,” Surratts-Clinton Branch Library supervisors Mary Kietzman and Shannon Young said. 

The Surratts-Clinton Branch Library, designed by AS Architects, also includes 60 computers for the public, along with a computer lab, as well as a meeting room with a stage, a conference room, and six study rooms – including a room for children and one for teens. It also includes a new entrance, new decorative metal panels on the exterior, a vending cafe, a fireplace, a comfort room for parents, a fully-enclosed children’s area and teen zone, and “Reminisce” by Carey Dean, a stained glass mosaic near the entrance which depicts views of the Chesapeake Bay from Calvert Cliffs State Park, funded in partnership with the Prince George’s County Arts and Humanities Council’s Art in Public Places Program.

Surratts-Clinton, originally dedicated in January 1980, was built on land once owned by the Piscataway Nation and is named for two historic names for the area. It closed to the public for renovations in the summer of 2019, and construction began in February 2020. PGCMLS hosted a temporary pop-up location at Davies Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Temple Hills during the closure.

“There is a lot to be excited about with this beautiful new renovation. Customers won’t even recognize it as the same building on the inside – that is how much has changed,” said Nestor Diaz, PGCMLS communications manager and former Surratts-Clinton Branch Library staff member. 

The Surratts-Clinton Branch Library will be open during the same hours as other PGCMLS branches: 10 am-6 pm Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays; 12-8 pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and 10 am-5pm Saturdays. More details about a grand opening event will be shared when they are finalized.
